Walk through a wealth of history

Chestertown dates back to 1706 when it was a mid-Atlantic port of entry for the colonial movement into Maryland. When you visit with your Maryland car rental you will discover that it was a prosperous shipbuilding and trading centre. Court records date back to the 1640s, the oldest in the state. In the 18th and 19th centuries, this was also the location of choice for wealthy merchants; some of the finest historic buildings in town date back to this time. The Hynson-Ringgold House is renowned for its antler staircase and hip roof!

Each September, the Kent County Historical Society offers a Candlelight Walking Tour of many of these spectacular homes. There are also historic house tours in October and December that will give you a peak into some of these magnificent old treasures.

Overboard!

Chestertown was part of the American Revolution. Each Memorial Day history comes to life as there is a reenactment of the news of the Boston Tea Party. When news spread to Maryland, as you will learn when you visit with your Maryland car rental, Chestertown residents boarded the Brigantine Geddes, which had dropped anchor in Chester, and tossed the contents into the sea. George Washington passed through here eight times during the Revolution and in working towards an independent nation. It was part of the journey to Philadelphia. As the British advanced here during the War of 1812, they burned the town, leaving only a church and two brick houses at the top of the hill.

One with nature

If you are visiting in your Maryland car rental to see some of the wildlife here, you will want to make the Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge one of your stops. This is an unspoiled island that features the characteristic biodiversity of the Chesapeake region, from the pine forests to the tidal wetlands. Sunrise and sunset are ideal times to visit as you can see deer grazing, the red fox coming out, and the osprey taking food to their young.

Chestertown is a town where you can park your Maryland car rental and take a tour of a couple museums, sample some old-fashioned ice cream, stay in a cozy Bed & Breakfast, and do a little antiquing. This is an excellent stop in this state.
